More and more foreign residents in Antalya are buying cars — and quickly discover that the insurance system here has its own logic. Here is what actually matters, without the jargon.
The Two Policies You Should Know
1. Traffic insurance (MTPL / trafik sigortası) is compulsory for every vehicle registered in Turkey, regardless of the owner's nationality. It covers damage you cause to other people — not your own car. Driving without it means fines and the vehicle being taken off the road.
2. Kasko (comprehensive insurance) is optional and covers your own vehicle: collision, theft, fire, natural events and more. For newer or valuable cars, most owners consider it essential.
What Documents Do You Need?
- Passport and/or residence permit,
- A Turkish tax number (easy to obtain — we can guide you),
- The vehicle registration (ruhsat).
With these, a policy can be issued the same day — usually entirely over WhatsApp.
The No-Claims System Works in Your Favor
Turkey uses a no-claims level system (hasarsızlık basamağı) for traffic insurance: first-time buyers start at level 4, and every claim-free year moves you up a level and increases your discount. The level belongs to you, not the insurance company — you keep it even if you switch insurers.
Practical Tips From the Field
- Renew before expiry. A gap in coverage risks fines and can affect your discount level.
- Check kasko details, not just the price. Deductibles, authorized-service repairs and replacement-car clauses make the real difference at claim time.
- Small claims deserve a calculation. Sometimes paying a minor repair yourself preserves a discount worth more — we do this math with you before you decide.
- Keep your documents consistent. The name on the policy must match your passport exactly.
